2019 Email Security Trends, Challenges, and Benchmarks

Second Annual Survey Report

The GreatHorn team conducts an annual survey to get a pulse on email security.

Increase in email threats in end-user inboxesThis year’s survey findings (from 1000+ professionals) provide a better understanding of today’s pervasive email-borne threats and how InfoSec and IT teams are defending this vulnerable, yet venerable communications platform.

Key Findings

  • Despite having at least two email security solutions already in place, half of respondents see malicious email threats (impersonations, wire transfers requests, W2 requests, malware, credential theft attempts, and more) reach their inboxes every week
  • Every week, more than 1/3 of respondents have to do manual email remediation like PowerShell scripting, etc.
  • 1 in 5 respondents have experienced a breach (due to an email-borne attack) in the past three months.

The current state of email security is shaky. Email security professionals need to be more vigilant as end-users are seeing more threats making their way to inboxes—25% more compared to last year.
